THE LARKE'S NEST
Places of Worship
This gallery presents a collection of drawings by my great-grandfather, John Larke, devoted to the quiet beauty of places of worship. Captivated by the forms of churches, chapels, and other sacred buildings, Larke focused on their presence in the landscape—their spires, stonework, and silhouettes standing in quiet dialogue with their surroundings. Working from direct observation, he sketched these structures with care, often selecting perspectives that emphasized their character, setting, and presence within the landscape. His drawings reflect not only the architectural detail of each building, but also the quiet reverence they inspire. Through this collection, we celebrate Larke’s deep appreciation for sacred architecture and his ability to honor these spaces through line, texture, and an artist’s attentive eye.

Uxbridge Quaker Meeting House AD. 1820
A good example of board an batten construction, this meeting House was erected in 1820 to replace an earlier log structure. The building stands in the midst of the original Uxbridge Quaker Settlement, a venture begun in 1805 by some twelve families from Pennsylvani9a. The unaffected design reflects the Quaker philosophy of plainness and restraint. The settlement proposed until the mid nineteenth century when the population declined. Closed in 1925 the place has been re opened for annual interdenominational religious services. In the adjoining cemetery on "Quaker Hill" are buried some of the early settlers including Joseph Gould a noted local industrialist and parliamentarian.

Ellis Chapel.
Pioneer Stone Church.
Hespeler Ontario.
Puslinch Township.
Edward Ellis, who had settled in Puslinch in 1839, donated one acer of his land to Trustees of the the Sterling Congregation of the Weslyan Methodist Church.
This Ellis Chapel was erected here in 1861 through devoted community effort & for many years church services and a non denominational Sunday School was held here.
The men and woman who built this chapel Tediously stone by stone with their own hands gave of their time, Which might have been used to better their farms , gave of their meager means even though it meant doing without - in firm belief that "man does not live by bread alone " and that the spiritual need of their & of succeeding generations might be ministered unto and nurtured here.
By our efforts we earnestly pray that we may ever keep before ourselves and others, the Faith of our Fathers" That the Chapel many not fall into ruin , instead be a heritage & remain a place of beauty, of which we might be justly proud.
Our Organ was the first organ to reach the Huron Tract, Coming from Ox, cart from New England
